| The concert features music Made in America. The first half includes John Adams’ The Chairman Dances, an outtake from his opera Nixon in China, Samuel Barber’s First Essay for Orchestra, as well as a perennial crowd-pleaser, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. The concert closes with Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3. Copland was recognized for creating music more quintessentially American than that of any of his peers. His first large-scale symphony was Symphony No. 3, an end-of-war piece intended to reflect the euphoric spirit of the country at the conclusion of World War II. The work features Copland’s simplicity, gentleness, and nostalgic-Americana style.
